Hey New Leafer!
I bet you were wondering if there'd be a New Leaf Rundown this week.. why? Did we miss something?
First - ICYLUAR (in-case-you-live-under-a-rock),Mark Carney caused quite the stir , recruiting ONDP Deputy Leader Doly Behum to run in the Scarborough Southwest federal by-election.
The second shoe dropped when Nathaniel Erskine-Smith announced his intention to seek the nomination to fill Begumâs seat, fueling rumours about his speculated leadership bid. Qadira Jackson, the immediate past candidate, followed up shortly thereafter with her own announcement .
This coming week is a big week for our party, with a new by-election soon to be called in SSW and Leadership rules to be announced this weekend. We've always held as a core belief that our party is at its best when we minimize barriers to participation for candidates, volunteers and voters.
While we will have lots to say on the by-election madness, including thoughts on some of the rumors swirling around the red mill - there's one big thing we need to focus on: The Leadership Rules.
New Leaf Liberals have been saying for months now - this whole process took way too long. If these rules had been decided sooner, this week might well have been a lot less unpredictable. While some on the EC (including our own New Leafers) moved months ago to speed things up, we now find ourselves picking between a series of imperfect options.
We strongly believe the race needs to happen sooner than later . Getting a race done by mid summer enables a series of benefits, including: Time to host (very lucrative) Leadership Dinner(s) in 2026, time to begin local candidate recruitment and nominations, time to hit the summer BBQ circuit, and more time to get building.
We wish the Executive Council the best in their deliberations this weekend, and while better late than never, these decisions are too important not to get right.
